English translation Gazeta Wyborcza is one of the first places I would like to look when I am searching for stories from Poland. It has a large newsroom, plenty of material, and a lot of coverage of culture, economics and everyday life. Jest tylko jeden problem. Strona nie bardzo chce ze mną współpracować. English translation There is only one problem. The website does not seem particularly interested in cooperating with me. Otwieram Wyborcza.pl w Chrome. Niewiele się dzieje. Próbuję Edge. Podobnie. Tryb incognito? Też nie. Więc zaglądam do konsoli przeglądarki i widzę serię komunikatów: English translation I open Wyborcza.pl in Chrome. Not much happens. I try Edge. Much the same. Incognito mode? No luck there either. So I open the browser console and see a series of messages: `Failed to load resource: net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED` Innymi słowy: przeglądarka próbuje pobrać arkusze stylów i skrypty potrzebne do zbudowania strony, ale nie potrafi znaleźć serwera, z którego ma je pobrać. English translation In other words, the browser is trying to download the stylesheets and scripts needed to build the page, but it cannot find the server it is supposed to get them from. To nie wygląda jak zwykły paywall. Nie wygląda też szczególnie jak blokada geograficzna. Sama strona istnieje i jest indeksowana. Problem pojawia się gdzieś w tym nowoczesnym internetowym ekosystemie, w którym jedna gazeta nie jest już po prostu jedną stroną internetową. English translation It does not look like an ordinary paywall. It does not particularly look like geo-blocking either. The site exists and is indexed. The problem seems to appear somewhere inside the modern web ecosystem, where a newspaper is no longer simply one website. Są systemy zgód na cookies. Reklamy. Logowanie. Analityka. CDN-y. Skrypty. Osobne domeny. Zewnętrzni partnerzy. I wystarczy, że jeden element układanki przestanie odpowiadać, żeby czytelnik dostał zamiast artykułu coś pomiędzy pustą stroną a niedokończonym szkieletem. English translation There are cookie-consent systems. Advertising. Login systems. Analytics. CDNs. Scripts. Separate domains. External partners. And if just one part of that puzzle stops responding, the reader may get something somewhere between a blank page and an unfinished skeleton instead of an article. English translation Interestingly, I am not the first person to encounter strange technical behaviour on Wyborcza. Earlier this year, a user on the Gazeta.pl forum described a situation in which the site reportedly redirected them to an external advertising domain, kokamedia.com. After the issue was reported, that domain was apparently blocked in the advertising system. To nie jest ten sam błąd, który widzę u siebie. But it illustrates something important: a modern news site consists of far more moving parts than the reader ever sees on the screen. A Wyborcza jest dodatkowo właśnie w środku dużej przebudowy. Agora łączy zespoły Wyborcza.pl i Gazeta.pl, integruje technologie, dane i procesy, a od początku 2027 roku oba serwisy mają dostać wspólną stronę główną. English translation Wyborcza is also in the middle of a major rebuild. Agora is combining the teams behind Wyborcza.pl and Gazeta.pl, integrating technology, data and processes, and from the beginning of 2027 the two services are expected to share a common homepage. Firma sama mówi o uproszczeniu struktury, ograniczeniu dublowania procesów i usprawnieniu technologii. Brzmi znajomo. Jeżeli firma sama uważa, że technologię warto uprościć, to chyba można bezpiecznie założyć, że obecna konstrukcja nie jest idealnie prosta. English translation The company itself talks about simplifying the structure, reducing duplicated processes and improving the technology. That sounds familiar. If the company itself thinks the technology should be simplified, it seems reasonable to assume that the current setup is not perfectly simple. Nie twierdzę oczywiście, że mój `ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED` jest bezpośrednim skutkiem tej reorganizacji. Tego nie da się stwierdzić na podstawie samego komunikatu w Chrome. Wiem tylko, że przeglądarka nie potrafiła rozwiązać nazw hostów potrzebnych do pobrania części zasobów strony. English translation It is a shame, because this is exactly why I wanted to use Wyborcza more often. I have a blog about Poland. I look for stories from larger Polish media outlets so that I do not rely on one source for everything.
