English translation

In 2024, it looked as though a small piece of Warsaw was about to disappear. Bar Lussi — the zapiekanka stand that had stood by the Palace of Culture and Science since 1991 — was supposed to leave the place where it had survived more than three decades of Polish capitalism, kebabs, new skyscrapers, renovations and successive ideas about what the centre of the capital ought to look like.

Historia zaczęła się 4 grudnia 1991 roku. Polska dopiero uczyła się kapitalizmu, a okolice Pałacu Kultury wyglądały zupełnie inaczej niż dzisiaj. Pojawiały się kioski, handel uliczny i małe punkty gastronomiczne. Pierwszy polski McDonald’s miał zostać otwarty dopiero kilka miesięcy później. Lussi już tam było.

English translation

The story began on 4 December 1991\. Poland was only beginning to learn capitalism, and the area around the Palace of Culture looked completely different from today. Kiosks, street trading and small food stands were appearing everywhere. Poland’s first McDonald’s would not open until several months later. Lussi was already there.

English translation

You could buy burgers, hot dogs, kebab and pizza, but the real speciality became zapiekanka: a long piece of bread, mushrooms, cheese and ketchup. No deconstruction, no parmesan foam and no sauce prepared by a chef after a three-year internship in Copenhagen. Just zapiekanka.

English translation

Over the years, Warsaw around the kiosk became increasingly modern. The old market disappeared, glass towers appeared and Plac Defilad went through one transformation after another. Lussi stayed. A little like an object nobody threw away during successive house moves, until after thirty years it stopped being an old thing and became history.

English translation

There was only one problem. For years the stand had operated without the required permission to occupy the road area. Warsaw’s road authority imposed fines, owner Sebastian Rymbiewski fought them in court, and by 2024 the bill was reported to have exceeded 100,000 złoty. Eventually, it appeared that the fight was over. Lussi was going to move.

English translation

And then Warsaw did something very Warsaw-like. It began defending the kiosk. More than 20,000 people showed interest on Facebook in a “Rave at Lussi”. There would be techno, Jamiroquai and an attempt to break the world record for the longest zapiekanka. At the time, that record stood at 108 metres.

English translation

Książulo also joined the campaign to defend Lussi — the same Książulo who, two years later, would be selling his own pizza in Żabka. His video gave the kiosk a second life. People began travelling from other cities to try the zapiekanka he described as one of the best.

English translation

But the best part of the story only appears now. The 2024 article spoke about the end of Lussi at this location. It is October 2026 — and Lussi is still there.

Jeszcze w lipcu 2026 roku aktualizowane informacje o lokalu podawały ten sam adres: Aleje Jerozolimskie 50\. I nadal: czynne całą dobę.

English translation

In March this year, Warsaw Insider published an article simply titled “I Love Lussi”, describing the stand as still standing in the centre of the city. As recently as July 2026, updated business information still listed the same address: Aleje Jerozolimskie 50\. And still: open around the clock.

English translation

I am not going to pretend that I fully understand the current legal battle between Lussi and Warsaw’s authorities. It is clearly more complicated than a headline from two years ago suggested. But I rather like the fact that the kiosk that was supposed to disappear apparently never got the message.

Jest w tym też coś większego. Miasta chcą być uporządkowane, nowoczesne i estetyczne. To zrozumiałe.

English translation

There is something bigger in this story too. Cities want to be orderly, modern and attractive. That is understandable. The trouble is that the places people actually remember were often not designed by an aesthetics committee. They happened by accident. They were a little ugly. Someone bought food there after a night shift, someone after a party, someone while waiting for a train.

English translation

After thirty years, it turns out that this slightly ugly kiosk has something that is difficult to design into a new shopping centre: memories. And perhaps that is why thousands of people could care about the fate of a place that, from an architectural point of view, is basically a box selling cheese on a baguette.

Następnym razem, kiedy będę w Warszawie, chyba muszę sprawdzić to osobiście. Nie dla kebaba. Nie dla hamburgera. Klasyczna zapiekanka z pieczarkami, serem i ketchupem wydaje się właściwym wyborem.

English translation

The next time I am in Warsaw, I think I need to check this for myself. Not the kebab. Not the hamburger. A classic zapiekanka with mushrooms, cheese and ketchup seems like the proper choice.

O ile oczywiście Lussi nadal tam będzie.

English translation

Assuming, of course, that Lussi is still there.
