Polska jesienią: studenci, grzyby, jazz i trochę Dostojewskiego
Warszawa. Nierealny obraz.

Jesień w Polsce ma swój własny charakter. Studenci wracają do miast, lasy zaczynają pachnieć grzybami, światło robi się cieplejsze i bardziej dramatyczne, a zmierzch przychodzi zdecydowanie za wcześnie.

English translation

Autumn in Poland has a character of its own. Students return to the cities, the forests begin to smell of mushrooms, the light becomes warmer and more dramatic, and dusk arrives far too early.

English translation

I like this time of year. Especially in Polish cities, where the light can suddenly do something remarkable to an otherwise ordinary street. A little warmth remains, there is some gold on the façades, and an hour later it is dark and everything looks like a film set.

Wystarczy wtedy dorzucić dużą czarną wronę, kilka porządnych kości gdzieś pod drzewem i pytanie: co teraz?

English translation

Add a large black crow, a few solid-looking bones somewhere under a tree, and the question: where do we go now?

Odpowiedź jest oczywista.

English translation

The answer is obvious.

Idziemy coś zjeść.

English translation

We go and eat something.

Były filmy, moda, literatura, festiwale i nawet trochę Hollywood. Culture.pl

English translation

Culture.pl’s September cultural roundup fits that mood rather well. Warsaw Autumn had Signs as its theme this year and featured more than twenty world premieres. There were films, fashion, literature, festivals and even a little Hollywood. Culture.pl

Studenci lubią kulturę. Przynajmniej ci studenci, których ja zwykle spotykam. Wystawy, koncerty, wydarzenia, miejsca z glamour i miejsca całkowicie bez glamour. Dużo ludzi, dużo rozmów, czasami całkiem sporo inteligencji i refleksji.

English translation

Students love culture. At least the students I tend to meet do. Exhibitions, concerts, events, glamorous places and completely unglamorous places. Lots of people, lots of conversation, and sometimes quite a lot of intelligence and reflection.

English translation

And for some reason, sooner or later, everything ends up with jazz.

Tak już chyba jest w Polsce.

English translation

That is simply how it is in Poland.

Musi być trochę jazzu.

English translation

There must always be a little jazz.

Culture.pl

English translation

And every now and then Hollywood appears as well. Polish culture likes mentioning Hollywood. Oscars, Cannes, New York, Toronto, Telluride. This September there was plenty to point at: Marcin Dorociński appeared in Mayday alongside Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, Paweł Pawlikowski won Best Director in Gdynia, and Polish films and filmmakers were once again circulating through international festivals. Culture.pl

English translation

Still, I sometimes feel that Poland’s full encounter with Hollywood keeps moving slightly further away.

Historyczny, humanistyczny, wschodnioeuropejski. Trudno go spakować do dwóch zdań marketingowego opisu. Trzeba go trochę rozumieć, żeby naprawdę zobaczyć, co tam jest.

English translation

Perhaps because Polish culture carries quite a lot of luggage. Historical luggage, humanistic luggage, Eastern European luggage. It is difficult to squeeze into two lines of marketing copy. You need to understand a little of it before you can really see what is there.

Polska kultura lubi też najwyższy poziom.

English translation

Polish culture also likes the highest level.

Nagrody. Nobla. Oscara. Złote Lwy. Najlepszego reżysera. Najlepszego aktora. Najważniejszy festiwal. Największy sukces.

English translation

Prizes. Nobels. Oscars. Golden Lions. Best director. Best actor. The most important festival. The greatest success.

Wszystko ma być trochę wybitne.

English translation

Everything should be at least slightly outstanding.

I dobrze.

English translation

And why not?

Szczególnie kiedy wysoka kultura spotyka się z czymś kompletnie przyziemnym.

English translation

Especially when high culture meets something completely ordinary.

Na przykład z zapachem nastolatków.

English translation

Like the smell of teenagers.

Culture.pl

English translation

Polish scientists were among the researchers behind a study of how parents perceive the smell of their children. Babies smell wonderful to their parents. Teenagers, apparently, rather less so. The work received an Ig Nobel. Culture.pl

To jest, używając naukowego języka, interesujące.

English translation

That is, to use scientific terminology, interesting.

Można to niemal poczuć.

English translation

You can almost smell it.

We wrześniowym zestawieniu pojawia się też Dostojewski. Film The Idiot(s) Małgorzaty Szumowskiej i Michała Englerta trafił na festiwale w Telluride i Toronto. Culture.pl

English translation

Dostoyevsky also appears in the September roundup. Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert’s The Idiot(s) travelled through the Telluride and Toronto festivals. Culture.pl

Dostojewski zawsze dobrze pasuje do tej części Europy.

English translation

Dostoyevsky always fits this part of Europe rather well.

W mojej prywatnej kolekcji skojarzeń szczególnie dobrze pasuje Gracz. Hazard, obsesja, honor, pieniądze, absurd, emocje większe niż rozsądek.

English translation

In my own collection of Polish associations, The Gambler comes particularly quickly to mind. Gambling, obsession, honour, money, absurdity, emotions larger than reason.

English translation

A very Slavic mixture: everything is slightly tragic, slightly funny, and throughout it all you have the feeling that somebody is about to do something completely unreasonable.

Cóż za piękne miejsce do życia.

English translation

What a heavenly place to be.

Smacznego.

English translation

Yum.

A tymczasem jesień idzie dalej. Zdecydowanie za wcześnie pojawią się dynie, szkielety i Halloween, a chwilę później bombki, renifery i Boże Narodzenie.

English translation

Meanwhile autumn continues. Far too early, pumpkins, skeletons and Halloween will take over the streets, and shortly afterwards come baubles, reindeer and Christmas.

English translation

So before everything turns into seasonal decoration, perhaps we should spend a little time being cultural.

Być na bieżąco.

English translation

Being up to date.

Być trochę wspaniałym.

English translation

Being fabulous.

I, jeśli się da, trochę młodym.

English translation

And, if possible, being young.

English translation Wrocław was not always Wrocław.
